5 Tips for Watering Your Southeast Florida Lawn

Summer is just around the corner making now the perfect time to think about how to take care of your lawn.

Do you want a beautiful and lush lawn? Be the envy of the neighborhood with proper lawn care. Spring is the perfect time to establish the right watering routine for your lawn. The key to effective lawn watering is to water early, evenly and slowly.

Don’t waste water or frustration on poor lawn care. Get it right from the start.

Tips to Improve Your Lawn Watering

1.     Water Early

The morning is the best time to water the lawn. Watering during the hottest part of the day results in more evaporation and less absorption. This not only waste water but doesn’t give your lawn the moisture it needs.

2.     Water Evenly

Even watering means more consistent grass growth and appearance. Run each of your sprinkler zones for the same amount of time. Typically, 20 to 30 minutes per zone works to provide the volume of water necessary. Try watering each zone for 10 to 15 minutes and then water a second cycle for the same amount of time. This allows water to absorb between watering cycles.

3.     Water Slowly

Just like with heavy rain, too much water pressure from your sprinklers will result in runoff. You want a steady stream of water like gentle spring rain. Again, you don’t want to waste water which wastes money without improving the look or health of the grass. A drip system works well to deliver water to flower beds and gardens.

4.     Water Infrequently

For most Southeast Florida lawns, you only need to water twice each week during the summer months. During the winter or rainy season, watering once per week should work best. Too much water can lead to disease. Plus, why waste money on extra or unnecessary watering if twice a week works?

5.     Test Sprinklers in Each Zone

Check each zone in your sprinkler system. Look for leaks, missing sprinkler heads or blockages. Also, ensure each sprinkler head is facing in the right direction for consistent watering. If one of your zones isn’t working, it could result in a dry patch of grass.

Enhance Curb Appeal

Quality lawn care improves curb appeal and keeps your lawn looking great all year. Most HOA’s set expectations for lawns, like no dead grass and keeping lawns trimmed. Avoid fines and lawn remediation costs.

A well-cared-for lawn also helps maintain property values. Don’t wait until you need to sell your house to think about the lawn. It’s much easier to simply stay on top of home maintenance.
